Black Queens want to qualify for 2027 Women’s World Cup – Kim Lars Björkegren

Date:

Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjrkegren has outlined Ghanas ambition of securing qualification for the 2027 FIFA Womens World Cup ahead of their campaign at the 2026 Womens Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Ghanas senior womens national team are currently in Casablanca preparing for their opening Group A fixture against tournament debutants Cape Verde on Wednesday at the Moulay Rachid Stadium.

Reflecting on the teams progress since winning a bronze medal at the previous edition of the continental championship, Bjrkegren expressed satisfaction with the development of his squad and their exposure to high-level opposition.

We were happy with the bronze medal in the previous WAFCON, and we have improved over the years by playing against elite opponents. We beat Russia, and we also played well against England in December even though we lost, the Swedish tactician said.

The Black Queens coach revealed that the team has set clear targets for the tournament, with qualification for next years FIFA Womens World Cup in Brazil serving as a major objective.

We have three targets. The first is to qualify from the group stage. The second, which is very important, is to reach the semi-finals because that will qualify us for the World Cup. If we achieve that, then we have to go all the way and win WAFCON, he added.

Bjrkegren, however, acknowledged the challenges ahead and insisted Ghana will approach every game with confidence while maintaining respect for their opponents.

I have seen everything in three steps, but we will do everything with confidence and respect for our opponents, he said.

After facing Cape Verde, Ghana will continue their Group A campaign against Cameroon on Saturday, August 2, before wrapping up their group matches against Mali on August 6.

The four teams that reach the semi-finals of the 2026 WAFCON will earn qualification for the 2027 FIFA Womens World Cup.
